Do I Need a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Whether you need to have one tooth removed or several, our team will make sure your experience is comfortable and stress-free. Here is what you can expect when you arrive for your extraction:

• First, Dr. Patterson will administer local anesthesia to your affected tooth. This will numb your mouth and reduce any pressure or discomfort you may experience. For additional comfort and relaxation, we also offer dental sedation options.
• Depending on the state of your tooth and its position in your jaw, our dentist may make an incision in the gum tissue to prepare it for extraction. Dr. Patterson will explain this process to you before your procedure. If your tooth has already come through the gumline, this will not be necessary.
• If your tooth is impacted, our dentist may break it into smaller pieces for easier removal. Our dentist will go over this with you prior to extraction. Once ready, the tooth is pulled out.
• Next, the extraction site will be thoroughly cleaned and sutured. Our dentist will control your bleeding by having you bite down on a piece of gauze. Be sure to hold the gauze to your gums to allow a clot to develop in the socket.
• Finally, our dentist will prescribe pain relievers and antibiotics to reduce your discomfort and prevent infection. Our team will also provide a detailed list of post-operative care instructions to help make your recovery as comfortable as possible.
